“Kayman, what’s wrong?”

“What?”

I had been talking to Kay for the last five minutes about one of my jobs and I could tell that he hadn't really heard a word that I said. I had no idea why he wanted to go out to eat because he hadn't really paid attention to me or Kennedy all night.

“Baby, what’s wrong?” I looked down at Kennedy who was next to me on the bench of our booth before I looked across at Kayman.

“Nothing, I’m fine.” He offered up a half-assed smile before he looked around Sage House. With everything going on, it had been a while since either of us had been here, but it was still one of my favorite places to go.

“You’re far from fine. You’ve been in your head all night and that’s not like you. I’m not an expert on much, but I’m an expert on you. So tell me what has got you so wrapped up.”

Kay chuckled before he lifted his beer and then turned it up. Once it was on the table again, he looked me right in my eyes.

“You know me, Laney?”

“Yes, Kayman, I know you. But right now I would like to know what's going on in there.” I pointed at his forehead which made him offer up a genuine smile this time.

“It's nothing. Just business,” Kay said nonchalantly.

“So tell me about it then.” I didn’t really keep up with what he had going on unless there was a threat that I needed to be aware of, but occasionally, if Kay needed a sounding board he would run stuff by me. He would talk and I would listen. I would offer my opinions sometimes, if he needed it, but it was mostly just a way for him to talk his way through situations.

“Come on, let's go.” Kay pulled out his wallet and tossed a few twenties on the table before standing.

“How do you know I was done?” I asked with a grin.

“Because, I said you’re done.” Kay winked at me and then stood. “Hold up though, stay here for a minute and let me run to the bathroom real quick.” I just shook my head and watched as his sexy ass walked away. My euphoric state from watching my man was quickly snatched away from me though when I heard a voice next to me.

“Damn ma, you need somebody to help raise that cutie. Hell fuck that, let’s just make her a brother or a sister.”

I looked up into a face of a man who was clearly risking his life by being that close to not only me, but Kennedy as well.

I looked toward the direction of the bathroom and there was no sign of Kay. “You have about thirty seconds to walk away from this table before you put yourself in a situation that will likely cost you your life.”

“Damn ma, it's like that. You holding over there or what?”

Again, I looked down at Kennedy but this time when I looked up again, I saw Kay and heard his voice.
